The weekend’s ticker: Gwen Jorgensen wins the World Cup in Japan – the winners of the Challenge World bonus have been determined

In a real crime thriller, Gwen Jorgensen secured victory at the World Cup in Miyazaki. The Ironman 70.3 Melbourne and the Challenge Xiamen are currently taking place over the middle distance.

Ironman 70.3 Melbourne

Jarrod Osborne and Ellie Salthouse won the Ironman 70.3 Melbourne. Osborne secured his first professional victory over the middle distance with a time of 3:35:21, while Salthouse took her second victory in Melbourne after 2021 in 4:03:30.

Osborne started in 13th place after the swim and had to fight back to the top on the bike. Leader Jamie Riddle dropped out of the race due to injury, allowing Osborne and Jake Birtwhistle to take the lead. Osborne finally prevailed in the running duel and secured victory ahead of Birtwhistle (3:37:07 hours) and Nicholas Free (3:38:21 hours).

In the women’s race, Teresa Adam led after the swim and stayed in the lead until the end of the bike course, before Salthouse and Anna Bergsten moved to the lead on the run course. In an exciting running duel, Salthouse was finally able to narrowly prevail against Bergsten (4:04:01 hours). Radka Kahlefeldt took third place (4:06:32 hours).

World Triathlon Cup Miyazaki

In a dramatic race at the World Cup in Miyazaki, Japan, Gwen Jorgensen secured victory despite a fall in the second transition zone. After being over 15 seconds behind the leaders, the American fought her way up to the leaders during the third event. In a thrilling final sprint, she was finally able to overtake the Swiss Alissa König and narrowly won (59:54 minutes). König took second place (59:56 minutes), while Jolien Vermeylen completed the podium in third place (1:00:11 hours).

In the men’s race, Frenchman Maxime Hueber-Moosbrugger triumphed after a strong run and secured his first World Cup victory (53:59 minutes). In the final sprint he pulled away from his pursuer Ben Dijkstra, who took silver and also his first World Cup podium (54:07 minutes). A time penalty for Yanis Seguin enabled Japanese local hero Kenji Nener to win bronze (54:19 minutes).

Challenge Xiamen

Ognjen Stojanović won the Challenge Xiamen after a strong performance in 3:41:02 and secured second place in the Challenge Family World Bonus Rankings. Jesper Svensson initially led on the bike, but Stojanović overtook him on the run and was unstoppable. Will Draper came second (3:41:56 hours), Jack Moody secured third place (3:43:49 hours) and thus defended his top position in the World Bonus.

In the women’s race, Alanis Siffert dominated from the start and won with a time of 4:06:08, which also earned her victory in the bonus rankings. Els Visser took second place (4:12:55 hours), followed by Aurélia Boulanger in third place (4:17:12 hours).

World Triathlon Cup Brasilia

Manoel Messias was able to use his home advantage in the Brazilian capital Brasilia and celebrate as the winner. He owed this primarily to fantastic running performance. Messias needed 14:58 minutes for the final five kilometers of the sprint distance, achieving by far the fastest split of the day. After 53:35 minutes, the Brazilian crossed the finish line with a fairly comfortable lead. The fight for second and third place couldn’t have been closer. At the same time, Sergio Baxter Cabrera (ESP) and Callum McClusky (AUS) crossed the finish line after 54:10 minutes. Second place ultimately went to the Spaniard and third place to the Australian.

In the women’s race, the Mexican Rosa Maria Tania emerged as the winner after 59:25 hours. Here too, things became particularly exciting in the fight for the remaining podium places. Sandra Dodet from France took second place after 59:43 minutes, three seconds later the American Tamara Gorman crossed the finish line in third place.
