Sheriffs in Wisconsin swung into action Friday evening when a 10-year-old boy called 911 about an epic educational emergency: math homework.

The confused boy was struggling with his exercise problems, and when his family members were also stumped, the boy turned to law enforcement for help, the Shawano County Sheriff’s Office reported.

“He said, ‘Ma’am, I know I shouldn’t call 911 for this, but I could really use some help with my homework,'” dispatcher Kim Krause told ABC 2.

Krause, who was not trained in decimals, was unable to help him on the phone, but a deputy was sent to the boy’s house to help him solve the math puzzle.

“I personally am not particularly good at math, but I responded anyway to help,” Deputy Chase Mason wrote in his follow-up report.

“With Deputy Mason’s help, they were able to work together and solve the decimal-related math problems.”

After completing the assignment with court support, he was warned not to call 911 in the future except in life-threatening emergencies.

“When he goes to school and all the students see it, they’re going to think it’s so cool,” the deputy told ABC 2.

“Just hopefully next time they won’t all call me for math help.”

Shawano is a county of about 40,000 residents outside of Green Bay.

County Sheriff George Lenzner told ABC 2 they were only able to respond to the unusual SOS because it was a slow evening, but their officers are known for helping people with small emergencies like shoveling snow and replacing mailboxes.

“A great teaching moment for everyone. “Thank you, Deputy Mason, for taking the time to be a friend to this young man!” the office wrote.
