Wolfsburg mourns the loss of honorary citizen Manfred Kolbe

The city plaque holder in gold and honorary citizen of Wolfsburg, Manfred Kolbe, has died at the age of 90. According to a statement from the city of Wolfsburg, family, work and politics determined his work. As a role model for voluntary commitment and high commitment to the community of the city of Wolfsburg, Manfred Kolbe helped shape the cityscape in key areas. During his 38 years as a member of the city council, including almost a decade as mayor, he was outstandingly committed to the interests of the city of Wolfsburg and its citizens.

“It is with deep sadness that we say goodbye to Manfred Kolbe, who died on November 14th.” He earned great recognition on the political stage during his active time as a councilor and mayor. With his modest art and his voluntary work, he has had a lasting impact on the city’s society. “We will honor Manfred Kolbe’s memory and our thoughts are with his family,” said Mayor Dennis Weilmann.

Kolbe was born in Breslau in 1934 and came to Wolfsburg in 1956

Manfred Kolbe was born in 1934 in Breslau (Silesia), a then still Catholic province of Prussia. In 1956 Manfred Kolbe came to Wolfsburg. He was a teacher and headmaster of the Catholic Eichendorff School in Wolfsburg. He was a member of the CDU for more than 55 years and was a volunteer, serving as a councilor for 38 years, including ten years as mayor.

Another testament to his high level of civic commitment was the fact that he headed the senior citizens’ association from 1998 to 2013 until 2006, when he took on the community foundation and other voluntary tasks. In 2006 he was honored with the city plaque in gold. The Federal Republic of Germany awarded him the Federal Cross of Merit 1st Class in 2010 and the city of Wolfsburg awarded him honorary citizenship in November 2007.
