  • The Bowers Museum has several events inspired by the exhibition planned in its upcoming calendar, including a screening of 1982’s “The Dark Crystal” and a “Bowers Board Game Day featuring D&D.”

Grab your 20-sided lucky dice, your favorite Dungeon Master screen, and your rulebook right now, Roleplayer: An enchanted host of fantasy games, films, art, and ideas are flourishing in Santa Ana.

Of course, the city has always embraced the imaginative side of life – the area’s Halloween and holiday events demonstrate Santa Ana’s commitment to creativity – and this fantastical fun is on stunning display at the Bowers Museum.

“Fantasy: Realms of Imagination,” a large-scale exhibition celebrating some of the most iconic fantasy books, films, characters and creators, is now on view at the cultural institution.

To celebrate this imaginative, multi-month exhibition, which includes artifacts and odes to The Lord of the Rings, Dungeons & Dragons, Studio Ghibli and all sorts of popular speculative fare, the Bowers Museum is offering several exhibition-inspired events.

These include a screening of The Dark Crystal, Magic at Bowers Game Night and the opportunity to design a whimsical book cover in a special workshop.

And the chance to travel to Wonderland when the Orange County School of Arts Musical Theater Conservatory performs “Alice in Concert”? We grin like Cheshire Cats at the thought of this joyful treat at the end of January.

Be sure to check the museum’s events calendar for the date and details of the event you would like to attend. Some events are just a one-day offering, while others, like game nights, span several evenings.

And of course, you can simply stop by the museum, purchase a ticket, and enjoy the splendor of “Fantasy: Realms of Imagination,” an ethereal exhibition full of magic and lore.

If you’re currently in the swing of the season – meaning you’re heavily overbooked – don’t worry: the exhibition, presented by the British Library, will be on display until February 16th.

As for flying your kite to Santa Ana to enjoy this multi-item experience?

We’re pretty sure mythical creatures aren’t allowed into the museum at the moment. So leave your scale-covered best friend comfortably at home while you roam the remarkable hills and valleys of famous fictional fantasies.
