Former member of bitter rival UCLA announces new destination

The UCLA Bruins’ bitter rival has suffered another massive recruiting setback, as the USC Trojans watched as 2025 five-star quarterback Julian “Ju Ju” Lewis announced his commitment to the Colorado Buffaloes on Thursday afternoon on ESPN announced. He originally committed to the Trojans since August of last year.

Lewis joined ESPN’s “Pat McAfee Show” and announced his commitment just days after announcing his retirement from USC.

“I will continue my athletic and academic career at the University of Colorado,” Lewis announced.

One of the country’s top players in the 2025 class also considered Georgia and Indiana as possible destinations after deciding to leave the Trojans. Many believed his first choice would be the Buffaloes, and after his recent announcement, they were exactly right.

Lewis was asked by McAfee what went into the decision, citing the dynamic between him and current quarterback Shadeur Sanders and head coach and NFL legend Deion Sanders. For Lewis, it seemed like a natural opportunity to join the Buffaloes with such a professional background.

“I mean, obviously just coming to Shadeur (Sanders) and seeing what he did to Colorado and what he did with it was a big thing for me,” Lewis said. “It’s definitely a blessing to be put in this position to pursue him and his father (Deion Sanders). I mean, I couldn’t top it.”

A big reason Lewis resigned from the Trojans was the current quarterback controversy. Junior Miller Moss has another year of eligibility and was a starter all season until transfer sophomore Jayden Maiava took the reins last week.

There’s a very high chance that both guys stay with the Trojans, which would pose problems for Lewis to come in and make an immediate impact since two veteran quarterbacks have plenty of experience.

Lewis’ top priority is to be able to start as a freshman, and that’s exactly what coach Sanders told him during the recruiting process. Lewis has a very good chance to be the Week 1 starting quarterback next season and an even better chance to succeed early in his career.

“Coach Prime always said, ‘The best man will play,’ and that’s exactly what I wanted, to be able to compete as a freshman,” Lewis said. “I mean, I wouldn’t enjoy sitting on the bench, so I want to get in somewhere where I can get a chance to play. He (Sanders) will let me compete for it. That was great for me.”
