The city of McColl is facing a public safety crisis as the entire police force resigns

On Friday, the city of McColl will not have a single police officer on duty because the entire police department, including the chief, has resigned.

Mayor George Garner said the city is in a difficult situation.

“We are actively working to hire a new police chief and more officers,” he said.

The McColl Police Department has experienced significant instability, having had six different chiefs over the past four years.

Some community members fear crime could increase if police leave.

“It’s sad, sad, sad as it can be. I don’t agree with this at all. We need our police in McColl,” said Teresa Stubbs, a local resident.

Lisa Bowen, another resident, expressed her fears, saying: “I feel unsafe. Very unsafe. Because anyone can do anything at any time.”

Police Chief Bob Hale attributed his resignation to his treatment by a city council member.

In a statement, Hale said: “For months, I have endured unwarranted and malicious behavior designed to undermine my integrity and leadership. These actions have not only impacted me personally, but have also created a toxic atmosphere that has impaired the department’s ability to operate effectively.”
