Newcastle United are reportedly preparing a move for Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi in the January transfer window, viewing the England international as a solution to their growing defensive problems.

As Daily Mirror reports (via WeArePalace), the Magpies are confident they can sign the England international for £30m, a significant drop from his valuation in the summer.

Newcastle believe they can sign Marc Guehi on the cheap

The Magpies made several offers to sign him last summer, even offering almost £65m, but Palace rejected all offers as they valued him at almost £70m. Eventually the deal fell through and Guehi remained at the club.

But with Guehi nearing the final 18 months of his contract at Selhurst Park and reportedly unwilling to extend his stay, Newcastle see this as a prime opportunity to complete a deal.

It has been reported that club director Paul Mitchell is personally interested in securing the defender’s services and the club will almost certainly make a move in January.

Guehi has established himself as an important part of Crystal Palace’s defense and a reliable option for the England national team.

Since joining from Chelsea in 2021 for a fee of €23.34 million, the 24-year-old has delivered consistently impressive performances.

He is known for his ability to combine defensive stability with offensive contributions and has already scored two goals this season, highlighting his all-round performance on the pitch.

Newcastle needs to strengthen their defense

With long-term injuries to key defenders Jamaal Lascelles and Sven Botman significantly limiting Eddie Howe’s options, the Magpies are now placing emphasis on reinforcements in defence.

Guehi’s extensive experience, including 109 Premier League appearances and 22 caps for England, makes him an attractive target who could integrate seamlessly into the squad.

Adding Guehi to the squad would not only fill Newcastle’s immediate defensive gaps, but also meet the club’s wider ambitions for sustained success.

His remarkable consistency in starting every Premier League game for Palace this season has made him a highly sought-after player, with several clubs interested in securing his services, including Liverpool and Tottenham.

However, the Magpies remain among the favorites to sign him. Although negotiations with Palace could present challenges, Newcastle are optimistic that Guehi’s contract situation and their urgent need for defensive depth will lead to a favorable outcome.
